Introduction to Renewable Energy

Renewable energy is any type of replenishable energy that derives from natural sources such as the sunlight, water, and wind. Although renewable energy has been around for centuries, the United States has used fewer natural energy resources and turned to other reliable energy sources such as non-renewable energy like fossil fuels, coal, oil, and gas. The overwhelming use of these non-renewable resources has caused an increase in greenhouse gases emissions into the environment, causing concern about global warming and climate change. 

In response to this growing environmental concern, many countries are promoting alternative forms of clean energy that can be more efficient than traditional fossil fuel methods because they don’t require burning or mining raw materials. They also produce less pollution and waste products. However, there are still some challenges with implementing renewable energy resources on a larger scale. In this article, we’ll discuss the pros and cons of renewable energy. 


Types of renewable energy

Solar energy 

Solar Power is one of the most popular forms of renewable energy that can be used in homes, businesses, schools, hospitals, factories, farms, military bases, government buildings, transportation systems, and utilities.


Wind energy

Wind power is another popular source of renewable energy used in many countries around the world. It can be generated by large-scale turbines that use the kinetic energy of moving air to turn generators connected to electrical grids. Wind farms have become increasingly popular due to their low cost compared with other alternatives.

Geothermal energy 

Geothermal energy uses heat from deep within Earth's crust to generate steam, turning turbines to create electricity. Geothermal plants require very little land area and can operate continuously without any need for human intervention. They are often located near fault lines, where earthquakes occur frequently. There are several different ways to extract this natural resource: dry steam injection, enhanced geothermal systems, and binary cycle.

Biomass energy 

Biomass energy refers to all organic matter burned directly for heating purposes. Biomass burning produces carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxides, particulate matter, and smoke. Burning forests release carbon stored over hundreds or thousands of years; however, trees absorb much of the released CO2 before combustion begins.

Hydropower energy

Hydropower is another form of renewable energy derived from water flow through dams. Hydroelectricity is produced when falling water drives turbine blades turning generator shafts. This type of power production requires significant amounts of water storage capacity. Dams are built across rivers to store water, so it flows downstream at a high enough speed to drive turbines.


The Pros of Renewable Energy:

Using renewable energy can be financially beneficial.
Renewable energy plants require less maintenance allowing a more affordable and reliable use of renewable energy sources. Additionally, if we use renewable energy sources, we'll depend less on foreign energy sources for energy supply.

Renewable energy can be an endless energy supply.
There are two types of energy: Renewable and non-renewable energy. The term "renewable" means that these energy sources can be replenished naturally and never run out. The sun, wind, and water have the capability of providing us with energy for thousands of years. 

Renewable energy is categorized as an eco-friendly clean energy.
Clean energy is a renewable energy that causes less environmental pollution and has lower or zero carbon and greenhouse emissions. Non-renewable energy such as fossil fuels emit larger amounts of greenhouse gas and carbon dioxide, leading to global warming, climate change, and degradation of air quality. 

Using renewable energy can help create new jobs.
The U.S. is setting carbon-reduction goals that will require manual labor to get the job done, allowing the renewable energy sector to become an attractive career option in the future.

Renewable energy can lead to cleaner air and water.
Burning fossil fuels to generate electricity causes pollution of the air and water we use. Investing in renewable energy can lower the negative impact on our air and water and contribute to an overall healthier environment by reducing pollutants.

The Cons of Renewable Energy:

Renewable energy is limited in some areas due to the weather.
The weather is crucial to the success of renewable energy resources. If weather conditions aren't ideal, renewable energy sources can’t generate electricity.

For example:

The hydropower generators need rain to get water.
Wind turbines rely on wind to produce energy. 
Solar panels need sunshine to collect the heat that's required to generate electricity.

Renewable energy still causes pollution.
Although renewable energy is a clean option for the environment, the sources are not always 100 percent free from pollution. Many renewable energy sources can emit greenhouse gases, like carbon dioxide or methane, into the air. Additionally, fossil fuels are needed to build the resources necessary for renewable energy, creating a carbon footprint, and diesel and gasoline are used to power transport trucks. 

The generation capacity of electricity is not enough.
There are challenges in generating large amounts of power that solely rely on renewable energy compared to traditional forms of energy generation like fossil fuels. Currently, renewable energy can’t power the whole nation. This means more renewable energy plants would have to be built to match the energy demand, or the country would have to find ways to reduce energy consumption drastically. 

The benefits of renewable energy are greater than the drawbacks

As with anything, there are positives and negatives when it comes to renewable energy. However, the benefits of using renewable energy are greater than the drawbacks. Transitioning to renewable energy on a personal, corporate, or governmental level can promote a cleaner, healthier environment for the future.
